Structural Integrity
Structural Integrity
Watercolor and gouache on Arches watercolor paper
30 x 40 inches
2022
Structural Integrity, Material Fatigue was painted in watercolor and gouache on paper in 2022 as part of the Enclosures series. The piece is a reflection on the relationship between interiority and exteriority, and takes as its inspiration the fragment “Casés” from Roland Barthes’ A Lover’s Discourse (1977). Casés may be translated as domiciles, squares, or compartments: defining structures within which one can be both protected and constrained. In this case, the house acts as the structural motif. The subject longs for the comfort of containment—a role, a commitment, a home, a place to be and to rest—even as she resists such structures for their illusory, inhibiting, or claustrophobic qualities.
This piece is available framed or unframed. If framed, artwork is raised and floated against a white mat behind plexiglass in a museum-quality white wood frame (33 x 44 inches).
